Professor Louis Cohen

Emeritus Professor Louis Cohen, former Professor of Education at Â鶹ֱ²¥ University passed away aged 92 on 26 September 2020 after a short illness. Professor Cohen was a member of staff at the University from 1977-1990. He joined Â鶹ֱ²¥ from Bradford University where he had been a Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology of Education.

Passionate about teaching, Professor Cohen initially studied at Bede College, Durham, then worked as a primary school teacher both in Great Britain and the United States. After returning from the US, he took up a Senior Lectureship in Sociology at Edge Hill College before joining Bradford University as a Senior Lecturer in the Social Psychology of Education in 1967.

A prolific writer, Professor Cohen published more than 18 books. He was the co-author of a seminal text, Research Methods in Education, a long-running bestseller covering the range of methods employed in educational research, and A Guide to Teaching Practice, which continues to be a major text for all students training to be teachers. He was awarded a D.Litt. for published work from Â鶹ֱ²¥ University in 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, his two children, David and Sharon, and six grandchildren. His wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson are also Â鶹ֱ²¥ alumni.

Lou will be dearly missed by his family and colleagues alike. Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Professor Cohen’s family, friends and all of those who knew him.
