Artist residencies and commissions

We work with a wide range of artists to deliver many aspects of our programme.

Every year there are numerous opportunities for artists to work with us on delivering our student-focused programme. From workshops and short courses to one-off projects, which often collaborate with a specific student group at the University.

There are also one-off artist commissions and artist residencies, which invite artists to engage with a specific part of the campus and/or the University's history.

In addition to this we manage , the University's contemporary art programme. Radar invites artists to produce new work in response to and as part of research undertaken across Â鶹ֱ²¥'s two campuses (Â鶹ֱ²¥ and London).

Harriet Rose Morley - Handicrafts Residency 2023/24

'Hard Wear, Soft Wear’ is a new iteration of work by artist Harriet Rose Morley. It unpacks the potential of feminist building and making practices, focusing on the pedagogical value of technical spaces in UK Art Schools.

Katie Schwab - Handicrafts Residency 2022/23

Katie Schwab explores the history of hosiery manufacturing in the East Midlands, leading up to a commission of a collaboratively knitted wall-based artwork.

Matthew Raw - Handicrafts Residency 2021/22

International ceramic artist Matthew Raw has been commissioned to produce a new public artwork for the façade of the former School of Art building.

Sarah Selby - Digital Arts Commission 2020/21

Working with students and staff from the University, Sarah Selby is working on a digital output which harnesses the potential of digital technologies to engender a sense of community.

Will Shannon - The Handicrafts Residency 2019/20

Responding to the history of the former Handicrafts Unit at Â鶹ֱ²¥, Will Shannon consulted with students over his design for a public workbench which has been installed in the student village on campus.

Ian Giles - Artist in Residence 2019/20

Working closely with the LGBT+ Association at the students' union, Ian created a specially designed cocktail menu and lounge to celebrate LGBT+ Â鶹ֱ²¥.
