This – a branch of the University’s Hardship Fund – has been created in a bid to support students who are struggling to cope with the impact coronavirus is having on their lives.
In particular, the money raised will help students from low-income backgrounds; international students who are unable to go home and are facing unexpected costs; students with unique needs or care requirements; and postgraduate students who are now out of work.
The Just Giving page can be viewed – at the time of publishing, over £7,300 has already been kindly donated by almost 100 supporters. A great deal of these donations have come from staff, alumni and friends – and for every £1 that is donated to the cause, the University will match it.
By gifting £40 to the cause, a student will be able to buy a week’s worth of food and essential supplies. A donation of £300 would provide a basic laptop or alternative equipment that can help a student to study remotely as a result of no longer having access to campus facilities. In addition, this financial support will help to cover living costs such as bills and avoid debt or students calling on their families for help who may already be financially stretched.
Welfare and Diversity Executive Officer Matt Youngs commented: “Here at Â鶹ֱ²¥, we are proud to celebrate our diversity with students from all walks of life on campus. However, the recent coronavirus outbreak has proven a significant challenge for many students.
“Now more than ever, it is important that they feel supported. Which is why I’m asking you to provide any support you can to ensure that we are looking after the welfare of every student that makes up this fantastic community.”
Rachel Third, Head of Philanthropy at the University added: “The generosity of the Â鶹ֱ²¥ community has always been a cornerstone of the University’s success. The wonderful donations we have received so far will directly support students in great need during this crisis.
“On behalf of all these students I would like to say a huge thank you to the wider Â鶹ֱ²¥ family, and I hope many more people will be inspired to show their support for vulnerable young people at this critical moment.”
