General

Why do I need to install Intune?

Intune provides central management of University owned mobile devices enabling us to enhance security and remotely wipe your data if your device is compromised.

I'm a staff member, can I enrol my personal device?

The service only supports university-owned devices.

I'm a student, do I need to enrol my device?

No - this service does not cover student devices,

My phone requires updates before I can install Intune - what do I do?

Please follow the manufacturers guidance on updating your device.

I have been asked to set up a PIN?

As part of improving security on University owned devices, an 8 digit PIN needs to be added to the device.

What data does the University see?

For personally owned devices enrolled into Microsoft Intune, the following device information is available to the University:

  • Device name
  • Device owner
  • Serial number
  • Device manufacturer and model
  • Operating System and version
  • IMEI number
  • Apps installed (all apps on iOS, work profile apps on Android)
  • Storage space
  • Network services

What data does the University not see?

The University is unable to view the following information:

  • Calling history
  • Web browsing history
  • Emails
  • Text messages
  • Contacts
  • Calendars
  • Passwords
  • Photos
  • Content of user created documents.

What control do I have over the information the University captures?

Members of staff who have enrolled personally owned devices have no control over what device information is captured. There are no configurable options available within the Intune App to allow device owner to customise or control the information available to the University and the actions it is permitted to take. Microsoft dictate the device information collected and this is not configurable by the University.

Data

What if my data if accidently wiped?

There are stringent processes in place to ensure no data wipe is carried out without agreement and approval.

Will my data transfer from an old device to a new device?

Your data will not transfer between devices by default. Any data you wish to transfer should be backed up and re-imported to your new device. 

What data retention policy is in place?

Do I lose data when enrolling on Intune?

No - Intune does not remove data during the enrollment process.

When I leave, what happens to my data?

Your phone will be wiped and data contained on it will be deleted.

Can my data be recovered if my phone is wiped or I accidentally delete information

No - we do not provide data recovery services.

Handset, Apps and Account

What do I do when transferring from an old device?

Prior to resetting your old device, set up your new device and install the Intune App. Once both Intune and Duo are working on the new device your old device can be reset.

I have an Android device - how does this affect me?

Android devices will benefit from these additional security features at a later date and will continue in their current operation.

My device is old / has an outdated O/S - can I still use the service?

No - phones that do not meet the O/S requirements set out in the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) cannot be enrolled as these are a security risk. It is recommended you speak to your School/Dept to replace this with a newer device that has access to the latest operating systems.

I've connected to Intune and I can now see extra Apps on my device?

Intune enables the University to provide you with business-critical Apps such as DUO.

I'd like to install "x" App, how do I do this?

Please refer to the manufacturers guidance on how to install Apps, and consider if these meet the Universities Acceptable Use Policy.

Do I lose access to my Apple account when setting up a device?

University devices are provided to support University operations and not for personal use.
